Its for a 2004 Chevy Cavalier LSHow much does it cost for a oil change when I already have the oil and the filter?I own a shop, and see a lot of people purchase their own oil %26amp; filter, and bring it to our shop for us to do the work. Why?? So what if we make a buck on the oil %26amp; filter, we have to pay to dispose of your old oil %26amp; filter. Most shops can't make any money on oil changes anyway, and most do this kind of work out of courtsey to our customers. Suppose you got a filter that leaked, then what? We wouldn't fix that without charging you again for labor. Then you would be mad at us for charging you again. If we get the parts, then we stand behind the work, but if you get the parts, you stand behind the parts if they are faulty. Believe me, you aren't doing anyone any favors by getting your own parts, and it could end up costing you more in the long run. Jobs like these end up costing the shop money due to the fact; there is just no money to be made on oil changes. If we drop off work on a $1,000 job to do an oil change, then we loose money. It's hard to trust a mechanic, and you can be sure you are getting what you want by buying your own stuff, but what about the mechanic? Do you think he is happy to see you coming? Not at all. If you are a regular customer, then the shop is glad to help you out, but loosing money is not what shops are in business to do. They really don't make any money on oil changes unless this is what they do, and purchase their oil in 55 gallon drums at a good deal. You would be way ahead of the game if you just changed it yourself, and if you strip out the drain plug, then at least your mechanic can rest at ease, and work on that $1,000 job. Mechanics has to eat too, and believe me, they don't get rich at doing mechanic work, and this rings true if they must change oil for a customers 2-3 times a day. Have you ever tipped a mechanic for doing a good job? I'll bet you have tipped a waitress. Believe me; shops don't thrive on doing work like this. You may consider changing it yourself. At least you know the job is done to your satisfaction, and only the best oil %26amp; filter were used on your vehicle.

heres a how to for oil changes:

-jack up the car

-find the only bolt in the bottom of the oil pan (lowest part of the motor)

-remove that bolt (drain plug)

-all the oil will drain out so have a drain pan under it

-while your under there, find the oil filter

-simply unscrew the old filter (more oil comes out)

-screw in the new filter hand tight then half turn more

-put the drain plug back in (bolt in the motor)

-now just pour in about 4 quarts of oil in (under the hood now, there will be a cap that says oil on it where you add the oil)

-pull out the dipstick, wipe it off andput it back in

-pull the dipstick out again and see where the oil level is

-when you get the oil to the proper level, run the engine for a minute or so then check the oil level again

-add more oil if necessary

As for your question it depends where you take it if u take it to a lube place let them know you have the parts the labor will be about 10 to 15 dollars roughly and they may charge you disposal fee for the old oil and filter which is about 2 dollars or more but that not much .
